WINONA, Minn. - Five different players scored in a decisive 5-1 win for the Gustavus men's hockey team over Saint Mary's on Friday night. The Gusties improve to 9-5 overall and 6-1 in the MIAC, after playing their first conference game in over a month.Â
Joey Gimberlin got things going seven minutes into the game with his second goal of the season.
Jac Triemert and
Mason Hendrickson assisted on the play.
Drew Holt scored what proved to be the game-winner with 3:27 remaining in the first, assisted by
Luke Delzer, and the Gusties carried a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.Â
Nearly four minutes into the second,
Nate Stone tallied his third goal of the season with the help of
Nick Blood and
Riku Brown, and the score remained 3-0 after 40 minutes.Â
Hunter Newhouse posted his team-leading eighth goal of the season just 59 seconds into the third period, assisted by
Jack Anderson, and the rout was officially on at the 10:45 mark when
Jack Suchy scored an unassisted power play goal, marking his team-leading eighth score of the season.Â
The Cardinals ended the shutout at the 13:29 mark but the damage was already done in the convincing victory for the Gusties.Â
Gustavus went 1-for-3 on the power play and killed off all three Cardinal advantages.
Colin Androlewicz earned his third consecutive win in net after making 20 saves. The Gusties nearly doubled the Cardinals in shots on goal, 40-21.Â
"That was a 60 minute effort and everyone contributed which is what we needed being down two forwards who play significant minutes," said Head Coach
Tyler Walsh. "All four lines scored, our defense was strong led by our seniors, and Andro gave us the chance to impose our offensive game. You learn a lot about your team during a loss, but you can learn a lot during the wins as well."
Game two of the MIAC series is set for 7 p.m. Saturday at Don Roberts Ice Rink in Saint Peter.Â
