SAINT PETER, Minn. - The Gustavus men's hockey earned a MIAC sweep in convincing fashion Saturday night at Don Roberts Ice Rink, defeating Saint Mary's 5-1 for the second night in a row. The Gusties, who sit atop the MIAC standings with 21 points, are now 10-5 overall and 7-1 in the league.Â
It didn't take long for the home team to light the lamp as
Riku Brown scored just 1:50 into the game with the help of
Nate Stone. With three minutes remaining in the first, the Gusties took advantage of their first power play opportunity as
Hunter Newhouse scored, assisted by
Jack Anderson and
Jack Suchy. The Gusties took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.Â
Five minutes into the second frame, Newhouse tallied his second goal of the game - and team-leading 10th of the season - on a one-timer from
Jack Wineman. The Cardinals ended the shutout with two minutes remaining in the second, but Suchy answered 35 seconds later with a breakaway goal, his ninth of the season, and the Gusties led 4-1 after 40 minutes.Â
Joey Gimberlin added the fifth and final goal for the Gusties at the 10:37 mark of the third after skating end-to-end through the Cardinal defense for an unassisted score.Â
Colin Androlewicz earned the win once again in goal after making 21 saves. The Gusties out-shot the Cardinals 28-22 and went 1-for-3 on the power play.Â
"Not our best, but good teams find ways to win games," said Assistant Coach
Ethan Schwartz. "We had several players step up and positively impact our play. It'll take every man on our roster pushing their limits to stay on this roll. The sky is the limit for the Gusties and our goals are Golden."
Gustavus has its final two non-conference games of the season next weekend at home, hosting UW-Stout on Friday night followed by Northland on Saturday night.Â
