DUBUQUE, Iowa - Facing a two-goal deficit in the third period Friday afternoon, the Gustavus men's hockey team scored three unanswered goals in the final 4:30 of the game to defeat Dubuque 4-2, completing the series sweep. The Gusties improve to 8-5 overall and have won eight of their last 10 games.Â
After a scoreless first period in which the Gusties out-shot the Spartans 16-2, Dubuque tallied the first goal 16:57 into the second and held a 1-0 lead through the second intermission. The Gusties continued to dominate the shots on goal after 40 minutes, leading in that category 24-6.Â
The Spartans went up 2-0 just 26 seconds into the third and held the two-goal advantage until
Luke Delzer scored at the 11:23 mark with the help of
Artem Korolev and
Landon Johnson. Down but not out, the Gusties battled back in the final minutes of the game.
Jack Kubitz netted the equalizer with 4:33 remaining in regulation, assisted by
Kyle Heffron, and
Wilmer Svensson scored what proved to be the game-winner with 3:25 left in the contest. Korolev then scored an empty-netter with two minutes remaining and the Gusties skated away with the victory.Â
For the second consecutive game,
Colin Androlewicz earned the win in the crease after making 11 saves. The Gusties out-shot the Spartans 36-13.Â
Gustavus is back in action next Friday and Saturday for a MIAC series against Saint Mary's.Â
