SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus College Golden Gusties men's hockey team battled St. Olaf College Oles at home Friday night at the Don Roberts Ice Rink, falling 5-2.
The Oles jumped out to a big lead in the first period, scoring four goals in the opening frame. Although Gustavus outshot St. Olaf in the first period 11-7, the Gusties weren't able to find the back of the net.
Gustavus kept up their attack in the second period, outshooting the Oles 23-1. None of the shots in the frame would get past the goalies, sending the game of the third period with the Gusties trailing by four.
After a scoreless second period for both teams,
Wilmer Svensson put Gustavus on the board in the third with a goal assisted by
Grant Ellings and
Drew Holt.
St. Olaf scored once more on a power-play opportunity to go back up by four, but the Gusties answered with another goal by Svensson, assisted by
Ludvig Mellgren and
Hunter Newhouse,with just five minutes remaining.
Gustavus outshot the Oles 50-17 in the game.
Up next for the Gusties is another game against the Oles as they head to Northfield for an away game at St. Olaf on Saturday, November 15 at 5:00 p.m.
