SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus College men's hockey team battled the Concordia College Cobbers at home on Saturday night in the second of a two-game weekend series. The Gusties scored twice and shut out the Cobbers for a 2-0 victory.
The opening period went by without either team scoring. The Gusties outshot the Cobbers 20-10 in the frame with a 16-6 edge in shots on goal, but both goalies stood strong in goal to keep the game scoreless.
Gustavus broke through in the second period on a power play opportunity.
Charlie Sandven fired a shot from near the blue line that found the back of the net to put the Gusties up 1-0.
Hunter Newhouse and
Drew Holt assisted on the goal.
The score remained 1-0 until the last minute of the third period when
Nick Blood scored an empty net goal with 29 seconds remaining. Sandven assisted with the empty netter.
Gustavus outshot Concordia 54-37 and had a 40-22 advantage in shots on goal.
Marko Belak had 22 saves in goal for the Gusties to earn the shutout.
Up next for the Gusties is a road trip to Maine for a pair of games on the northeast coast. Gustavus first takes on Bowdoin College on Saturday, November 29 at 1:00 p.m. and then battles Colby College on Sunday, November 30 at 1:00 p.m.
