SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus College men's hockey team battled the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons at home Saturday night in a non-conference contest. The Gusties and Falcons scored 10 combined goals in regulation to head to overtime tied at 5-5, where
Wilmer Svensson scored the game winner to give Gustavus the 6-5 victory.
Concordia Wisconsin jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a goal halfway through the opening period. Gustavus responded in the final three minutes of the first period with two goals to take a 2-1 lead.
Sam Rice scored the first to tie the game up 1-1, assisted by
Jack Anderson and
Emil Samuelsson. Anderson put the Gusties ahead 2-1 with just 23 seconds remaining in the opening frame, scoring with assists by
Garrett Joss and Samuelsson.
In the second period there was an offensive explosion as both teams combined to score six goals. The Falcons scored the first three to take a 4-2 lead in the first six minutes of the frame. Gustavus responded with three goals of their own, as
Nate Stone, Svensson, and Garrett each found the back of the net to retake a 5-4 lead for the Gusties.
CUW tied the game again in the first minute of the third period, evening the score at 5-5. Both defenses stood strong for the remainder of regulation, forcing overtime.
In overtime, Svensson scored his second goal of the game to secure the 6-5 victory for the Gustavus.
Hunter Newhouse assisted Svensson with the game-winner.
