SAINT PETER, Minn. - Playing in a physical battle that featured 18 total penalties, the Gustavus men's hockey team wrapped up the regular season Saturday night with a 7-4 loss to Hamline. The Gusties, now 14-9-2 overall and 10-4-2 in the MIAC, enter the MIAC playoffs as the No. 1 seed and will host the winner of No. 4 Saint John's and No. 5 Concordia on Saturday, March 1.
Jack Kubitz gave the Gusties the early lead with a goal five minutes into the game, assisted by
Hunter Newhouse and
Oscar Carlryd, but the Pipers tallied three goals with 2:24 of each other to end the first and then tacked on two more in the second for a commanding 5-1 lead. The Gusties got off the schneid at the 12:21 mark of the second as
Joey Gimberlin scored with the help of
Drew Holt and
Landon Johnson. Three minutes later,
Jack Wineman scored, assisted by
Luke Delzer, and the Gusties trailed 5-3 at the second intermission.
Hamline took advantage of a power play early in the third and then scored again six minutes in for a 7-3 advantage. Holt scored the last goal of the game at the 7:47 mark, assisted by
Aiden Prochaska and
Wilmer Svensson.
The Gusties struggled on the power play, going 0-for-6, while the Pipers went 1-for-6. Hamline outshot the Gusties 26-22.
Marko Belak suffered the loss after making 19 saves.
