Baseball Splits Saturday Twin Bill at WashU

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Gustavus baseball team Saturday earned a doubleheader split at Washington University, dropping the first game 9-5 before capturing a 6-4 extra-inning win in game two, moving to 11-1 overall.

Gustavus 5, WashU 9

WashU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, taking advantage of a pair of wild pitches. The Gusties tied the game 2-2 in the second frame after a sac fly by Ross Hebel to score Brayden Kohls, and an RBI single by Sam Schneider to score Brady Schmitz.

The Bears immediately regained the lead with three runs in the bottom of the second, scoring on a double and two-run homer. WashU added a pair of runs in the fourth inning on another wild pitch and then a sac fly for a 7-2 lead, ending Luke Siegle's day on the mound. Siegle suffered his first loss of the season (3-1) after allowing seven runs on six hits with four strikeouts.

Gustavus made things interesting in the sixth inning with a trio of runs, bringing the score to 7-5. Tomas Nelson hit a two-run double, followed by an RBI single by Joe Burns, but the Bears hit a two-run homer in the eighth and held on for the win.

The Gusties were limited to just five hits, led by Kohls, who hit 2-for-3 with two runs, a walk, and a stolen base. Michael Prosch pitched four quality innings of relief, allowing two runs on two hits with three Ks.

Gustavus 6, WashU 4 (10 inn.)

The Gusties opened game two with a run in the first inning. Danny Gavin led off with a single, stole second, and later scored on a hit by Drake Siens.

The Bears took a 3-1 lead in the third inning on four hits, including a two-run triple and an RBI double, but the visitors responded with three runs of their own in the fourth. Siegle scored on a single by Gavin, Burns scored on a fielder's choice RBI by Chris Knowles, and then Schneider came home on a single by Siens for a 4-3 advantage.

Benny Mcdonald exited the game after pitching four innings, allowing three runs on four hits with three strikeouts. Brevin Goetz entered in the fifth and tossed a scoreless frame before giving up one in the sixth as the Bears tied the game on a sac fly.

Two batters after Siegle singles, Burns singled to center to put runners on the corners. Schneider drew a walk to load the bases and Gavin followed with a single up the middle to score Siegle and Burns.
