TUCSON, Ariz. - Gustavus baseball wrapped up its annual spring break trip to Arizona on Sunday with a 14-11 victory over Wesleyan University, finishing the trip with eight wins an zero losses. The Gusties improve to 10-0 overall and have started the season with 10 consecutive victories for the first time in program history.Â
The scoring brigade started in the first as
Brady Schmitz hit a two-run single, scoring
Chris Knowles and
Drake Siens. Wesleyan tied the game in the bottom half with a two-run homer, but the Gusties went back ahead in the second with four runs.
Danny Gavin hit a two-run double, scoring Siens and
Joe Burns, and later scored on an error. Schmitz then singled to left, plating
Brayden Kohls.Â
The Cardinals got a pair of runs back in the bottom half after an RBI single and sac fly, but once again the Gusties continued to add to their lead in the third as Knowles knocked home Burns, while
Luke Siegle hit a sac fly to score Gavin for an 8-4 advantage.
Wesleyan started its comeback bid int the fourth with three runs, tied the game in the fifth, and then took a 9-8 lead in the seventh. But as they did all game leading up to this point, the Gusties had an answer and scored four runs in the eighth to regain a 12-9 lead. Siegle, Burns, and Siens all had RBIs in the inning.Â
The Cardinals hit a home run in the eighth, cutting the difference to two runs, but the Gusties tacked on two more runs in the ninth after Siegle and Burns drove in runs. Wesleyan made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth by scoring a run and had the game-tying run at the plate, but
Adam Biewen closed the door with a strikeout to end the game.Â
Benny Mcdonald started the game and went 4.1 innings, allowing six earned on eight hits with four strikeouts.
Andrew Glovich did not allow a run or hit in 1.2 innings of relief, stikeoing out three.
Michael Prosch earned the win after pitching two innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits with four Ks. Biewen struck out the side in the ninth.Â
The Gusties totaled 18 hits, led by Gavin (3-5, 4 R, 2 RBI, 2 2B, BB), Kohls (3-5, 2 R, BB, SB), and Schmitz (3-6, 2 R, 3 RBI).Â
Gustavus now returns home and will travel to Washington University in St. Louis next weekend for a four-game series on Saturday and Sunday.Â
