SAINT PETER, Minn. - No. 14/16 Gustavus baseball got back to its winning ways Saturday with a doubleheader sweep over Augsburg. The Gusties out-scored the Auggies 25-4, collected 27 hits and hit seven home runs, improving to 21-6 overall and 7-2 in the MIAC.Â
Gustavus 12, Augsburg 2
The Auggies took an early 1-0 lead in the first, but it was short lived as the Gusties plated three runs in the second and never looked back. After
Brady Schmitz reached on an error and
Ross Hebel walked,
Sam Schneider hit his first homer of the season.
Augsburg added a run in the third with a couple hits, but the Gusties took a 7-2 lead in the fourth. Schmitz led off with a single, Hebel walked, and Schneider followed with an RBI ground-rule double.
Danny Gavin grounded out out to score Hebel, and
Brayden Kohls connected for his first home run of the season, scoring Schneider.Â
Gustavus put the game well out of reach in the sixth with five runs on five hits, highlighted by Hebel's first career home run.Â
Benny Mcdonald improved to 4-0 on the mound after going six innings with four strikeouts. He allowed two earned runs on four hits.
Tomas Nelson pitched a scoreless seventh.Â
Four players had multiple-hit performances, led by Schneider who batted 2-for-3 with two runs, four RBI, a walk, double, and a home run.Â
Gustavus 13, Augsburg 2
The Gusties put up three runs in each of the first three innings in another decisive win. In the first inning.
Chris Knowles had an RBI single,
Joe Burns hit a sac fly, and Schmitz followed with another run-scoring hit.Â
In the second frame, Kohls hit a two-run homer, his second of the day, and Knowles followed with his team-leading sixth homer of the season and 25th of his career. The third inning featured an RBI singles by Gavin, Kohls, and Knowles for a comfortable 9-0 lead.Â
Gustie starter
Luke Siegle did not allow a hit until the fifth inning, which led to the first Auggie run of the game. Kohls hit a sac fly in the home half to take a 10-1 lead before the Auggies added one in the sixth after a triple and a double.Â
Drake Siens hit his third homer of the season, and 24th of his career, to lead off the sixth, and the 10-run mercy rule was enacted in the seventh as
Oliver Leupold reached on an error and
Isaac Becker hit a walk-over blast over the left field fence.Â
Siegle earned the complete game victory, improving to 5-1. He allowed two runs on five hits with three punch outs. Siegle becomes the fifth pitcher in program history to win 20 career games on the mound, now with a 20-7 career mark.Â
Four players had three-hit performances, led by Kohls who batted 3-for-4 with two runs, four RBI, a home run, and a sac fly.Â
