GUSTAVUS NOTES

The No. 7 Gusties (27-2) reached the Sweet 16 by first winning the MIAC Playoff Championship, defeating Saint John's 75-66 (Recap | Box Score). The Gusties next hosted a regional quad of the NCAA Tournament with the first two rounds being played in Saint Peter. Gustavus took down Bethany Lutheran in the first round 86-70 (Recap | Box Score). In the second round, the Gusties rallied from down 12 to win 90-72 over Mary Hardin Baylor (Recap | Box Score), punching their ticket to Chicago.

Gustavus enters the third round of the NCAA Tournament with a 27-2 record, good for the third-best winning percentage in the nation at 93.1%. The Gusties have the third-highest margin of victory in the country this season, winning by an average of 18.3 points per game. Three-point shooting has been important to their success as the team has the fourth-best shooting percentage from beyond the arc in the nation at 38.4%.

A key feature of this Gustavus team all season has been their ability to control the ball and generate turnovers. The Gusties have by far the lowest turnover numbers in the nation, only giving the ball away 7.7 times per game with the 1.3 turnover per game gap between Gustavus and the runner up (9.0, St. Norbert) being the same as between second place and 25th place (10.3, Wittenberg). Additionally, Gustavus ranks second and third in the nation in assist to turnover rate (1.82) and turnover margin (9.0), respectively.

UCHICAGO NOTES

The No. 6 Maroons (23-4) made the NCAA Tournament as an at-large selection after falling to WashU (Recap | Box Score) in their regular season finale. Like the Gusties, UChicago was selected to host a regional to open the tournament. In the first round, the Maroons won 72-48 over Penn State Behrend (Recap | Box Score). In round two, they defeated No. 24 Otterbein 81-66 (Recap | Box Score), securing their place in the Sweet 16.

UChicago, like Gustavus, is excellent at controlling the ball. The Maroons rank right behind Gustavus in assist/turnover ratio at third in the nation (1.85) and are also third in turnovers per game (9.1). UChicago is near the top of the country in scoring efficiency and rebounding, ranking 23rd in field goal percentage (48.1%) and 22nd in rebound margin (7.3).

One key for UChicago against Gustavus will be their height. The Maroons have 6'8" Nick Roper and 6'7" Daniel Cochran in their regular starting lineup with 6'9" Noah Pit and 6'7" Blake Hawthorne being their sixth and eighth men off their bench, respectively. The tallest Gustie in their regular rotation is Andrew Quam at 6'5" followed by Carson Koch and Connor Beauchamp at 6'4".
