ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – Gustavus track & field continued its run of difficult weather at the Gene Glader Invitational, competing through heavy rain and an occasional lightning strike that disrupted the meet. Despite the less than ideal conditions, the Gusties pushed through the meet until it was ultimately called due to weather related equipment issues. In a small win against Mother Nature, only nine athletes had their day cut short this time around, a noticeable improvement from last week's mass cancellation at the Norse Invite.
The men's squad got rolling on the track with
Will Janzen, who turned on the jets down the stretch to place fourth in the steeplechase in 9:52.80.
Momentum carried into the 4x100m, where Gustavus entered four teams. The quartet of
Tyler Heil,
Frank Terwey,
Conner Martens, and
Jade Anstine made the most noise, sprinting to a second place finish in 41.81. The time puts them atop the conference and just a fraction shy of the school record, missing it by only .6 seconds.
Anstine kept things moving in the open 100m, placing fourth in 10.96. While
Nick Brauer added a sixth place finish in the 800m with a time of 1:54.93.
In the field,
Kyler Flunker cleared 1.96m in the high jump, a mark that not only won the meet but also leads the conference.
Logan Day led the throws group on the men's side, taking fifth in the javelin with a toss of 45.69m.
On the women's side, the field events excelled.
The discus crew made a strong statement with five Gusties finishing in the top 10.
Olivia Duncan led the charge with a winning throw of 43.68m, a mark that ranks first in the MIAC and 16th nationally.
Bella Sutch followed with a fourth place finish at 39.16m, moving her into second in the conference.
Yonna Harris added a third place finish in the shot put with a mark of 12.02m, ranking fifth in the conference.
Kayla Kajer continued her dominance in the high jump, securing another first place finish with a clearance of 1.58m. In the pole vault,
Maddox Lee placed fifth with a jump of 3.36m, good for fourth in the MIAC standings.
The Gusties will look to finally get some clearer skies and keep their momentum rolling when they host the Gustie Twilight this Wednesday, where the only thing they hope to see striking is fast times and big marks.
