Gustavus Athletics Reveals 2025-26 Golden Gustie Award Winners

SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus College athletic department has selected the Golden Gustie Award winners for the 2025-26 athletic year. The award winners for the 24th annual Golden Gustie Awards are voted on by all the head coaches in the department.
 
Male Athlete of the Year: Gage Gohl (Tennis)
 
Gage Gohl was named the Male Athlete of the Year. This is the third Golden Gustie award for the men's tennis senior, who previously earned the award solo as a junior and shared the award as a sophomore with doubles partner Tyler Haddorff the year they won the NCAA Doubles National Championship.
 
This year in doubles, Gohl finished as the national championship runner-up in the spring and made it to the ITA Cup Quarterfinals in the fall after winning the regional title. In singles, Gohl advanced to the second round of the NCAA Individual Championship this spring and made a run to the ITA Cup Semifinals in the fall after claiming the regional title. The senior earned both singles and doubles All-American honors and earned the ITA's Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship Award. Gohl finished the season ranked No. 14 in singles and No. 6 in doubles in the nation, going 19-13 in singles and 30-6 in doubles.
 
In the conference, Gohl led the Gusties to win the MIAC Regular Season Championship with a perfect 9-0 record in the conference and then to a MIAC Playoff title to secure an auto-bid to the NCAA Championship. The senior earned MIAC Singles Player of the Year, MIAC Doubles Team of the Year, MIAC Singles and Doubles All-Conference, MIAC Playoff Team, and MIAC Arthur Ashe Award honors.

Female Athlete of the Year: Karina Elvestrom (Tennis)
 
Karina Elvestrom was named the Female Athlete of the Year. This is the second time the women's tennis sophomore has earned the award as she we previously earned both the women's athlete and newcomer awards as a first year.
 
This year, Elvestrom led Gustavus to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Championship, going 30-6 overall. She also competed in both the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships. In the fall, the sophomore was the ITA Midwest Regional Champion in both singles and doubles and went on to advance to the doubles quarterfinals at the ITA Cup. Elvestrom earned both singles and doubles All-American honors. The sophomore ended the year ranked as the No. 73 singles player and as part of the No. 19 in doubles team in the nation, going 25-9 in singles and 25-5 in doubles.
 
In the MIAC, the sophomore led Gustavus to win the regular season title with an undefeated 10-0 conference record and then win the MIAC Playoff Championship to clinch their NCAA Tournament berth. Elvestrom earned MIAC All-Conference in both singles and doubles and was named to the MIAC Playoff Team.

Male Newcomer of the Year: Ludvig Mellgren (Hockey)
 
Ludvig Mellgren was named the Male Newcomer of the Year. The first year men's hockey defenseman earned DIIIHockeyNews Men's Second Team West All-American honors. He was also named to a USCHO All-Rookie Team Honorable Mention. In the MIAC, Mellgren earned All-Conference honors and was named to the MIAC All-Playoff Team. The first year had three points in the MIAC Playoff Championship game with a goal and two assists. Mellgren led the conference in points by a first year as a defenseman with 22. He scored eight goals, notched 14 assists, blocked six shots, and had a +19 plus/minus rating this past season.

Female Newcomer of the Year: Annika Beck (Swim & Dive)
 
Annika Beck was named the Female Newcomer of the Year. The first year women's swimmer helped lead Gustavus to win the MIAC Championship, earning MIAC Rookie of the Year honors. At the conference championship meet, Beck earned three All-Conference awards. The first year won the 500 and 1650 freestyles and was the runner-up in the 400 IM.

Men's Team of the Year: Men's Basketball
 
Men's Basketball was named the Men's Team of the Year. The Gusties advanced to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Championship, going 27-3 overall this past season. In the conference, Gustavus went 15-1 to repeat as MIAC Regular Season Champions and went on to win the MIAC Playoff Championship. Men's Basketball finished the year ranked No. 10 in the nation by D3hoops.com

Women's Team of the Year: Women's Tennis
 
Women's Tennis was named the Women's Team of the Year. Gustavus hosted a regional in the NCAA Championship and advanced to the Sweet 16, going 30-6 overall on the year. In the MIAC, the Gusties won the regular season title with a perfect 10-0 record. They then went on to win the MIAC Playoff Championship to punch their ticket to the national tournament. Women's Tennis finished the year ranked No. 15 in the nation by the ITA.
