Track & Field Dominates at Ole Open

NORTHFIELD, Minn. - Gustavus track & field performed for the last time before the MIAC Championships on Saturday, traveling to the host site of the conference meet, St. Olaf, for the Ole Open. 

On the track for the men, there were three personal bests in the 100-meter, led by sophomore Conner Martens (Nicollet, Minn.) with a time of 11.06 for third place. Sophomore Eric Richards (Mankato, Minn.) was the competitor for the Gusties in the 110-meter hurdles, winning the event with a personal best 16.14. First-year Anikan Larson placed second in the 200-meter, crossing in 22.59 before two personal bests in the 400-meter, first-year classmates Luke Scheel (Mankato, Minn.) and Logan Jandro (Minnetrista, Minn.). Sophomore Ty Swanson (Maple Grove, Minn.) won the 400-meter hurdles to end the single-lap events, but in the 800-meter, the mid-distance group garnered three personal bests. In the relay portion, the Gusties won both events, starting with the 4x100-meter where junior Tyler Heil (Appleton, Wis.), Frank Terway, Martens, and junior Jade Anstine (Sioux Falls, S.D.) crossed the finish line in 42.05. In the 4x400-meter, Heil, Anstine, Jandro, and Martens joined and also crossed first with a time of 3:24.12. 

For the women, sophomore Allison Stacy (Maple Grove, Minn.) won the 100-meter with a time of 12.37, along with a personal best for first-year Abby Groen (Mankato, Minn.) for the top performances. In the 100-meter hurdles, junior Chelsea Stahl (Stillwater, Minn.) won the event with a time of 15.79, 1.5 seconds faster than second place. There were three personal bests in the 200-meter, which was led by first-year Grave Bailey (White Bear Lake, Minn.) with a time of 26.24. In the 400-meter, senior Isabel Fynboh (Morris, Minn.) got third with a time of 1:00.28 and in the hurdles of the same distance, first-year Sophia Vogel (Prinsburg, Minn.) won with a time of 1:05.52, followed by two personal best performances from other Gusties. The 800-meter brought four personal bests and in the 1500-meter, first-year Siiri Anderson (Duluth, Minn.) led Gustavus with a second place finish at 5:01.11. First-years Anna Forbord (Northfield, Minn.) and Anna Gould (Amery, Wis.) also won events, the 3000-meter steeplechase and 3000-meter as well with times of 12:11.31 and 11:40.22 as well. The relay group of Stacy, sophomore Laura Thauvin (Mankato, Minn.) and first-years Vogel and Ava Loftness (Prior Lake, Minn.) in the 4x100-meter won while the 4x400-meter team of Fynboh, Bailey, and first-years Addison Enfield (Northfield, Minn.) and Ellyn Soli (Ham Lake, Minn.) also won. 

In the field, junior Wyatt Hudspith (Esko, Minn.) had the second furthest toss in the Discus with a 45.51 meter mark. Sophomore Kyler Flunker (Mankato, Minn.) continued his impressive season with another win in the high jump, crossing the 2.02 meter threshold. In the javelin, first-year Logan Day (Wayzata, Minn.) had the best mark of his young career, throwing a 56.40, good for the new No. 57 best mark in the country. In the long jump, three Gusties eclipsed six meters to finish second, third, and fourth, sophomore Jaylin Raab (New Richland, Minn.), junior Ben Wynia (Blaine, Minn.), and sophomore Liam Frommelt (Woodbury, Minn.). In the triple jump, senior Spencer Pearson (Rochester, Minn.) had the best finish with a 12.76 for third place in the final regular season meet of his career. 

On the women's side, junior Olivia Duncan (Savage, Minn.) won the discus with a heave of 42.68 meters, while first-year Yonna Harris (Mankato, Minn.) won the shot put with a personal-best 12.39 meters, the new Division III No. 96. To round off the throwing events, first-year Rylee Kimmes (Hastings, Minn.) won the javelin, touching 33.46 meters. In the high jump, sophomore Kayla Kajer (Lake Elmo, Minn.) got a personal best and the new Divsion III No. 28 mark with a 1.65 meter clearance while Loftness also continued to win the triple jump, leaping 11.46 meters. 

After a busy week, Gustavus track & field rests up and prepares for the MIAC Championships, this Friday and Saturday.
