Sanders, who also earned United Soccer Coaches Region IX First Team honors after being voted as the MIAC Defensive Player of the Year, ranked third in Division III with 12 shutouts after starting 22 of 23 games. His .853 save percentage was best in the region and 15th in the country, while his 0.63 goals against average was second in the region and 18th in the nation. Sanders played a pivotal role in the Gusties winning the MIAC regular season championship with an undefeated record of 9-0-1. He also made a number of key stops in two shootout victories to advance Gustavus to the NCAA quarterfinals for the first time in 17 years.
