Blessed with a tall frame and cat-like reflexes, Bret Newcomb established himself as the premier goaltender in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) in the early 90s becoming the first and only netminder at Gustavus to earn All-Conference honors in three consecutive years. After serving as the backup his freshman season, Newcomb would play virtually every minute between the pipes for the Gusties over the next three seasons. He would compile a 15-3-4 mark with a 2.70 goals against average his sophomore season leading the Gusties to a MIAC Playoff Championship and NCAA Tournament berth. His junior season, Newcomb posted a mark of 14-6-3 with a 3.70 goals against average and once again led the Gusties to a MIAC Playoff Championship and another NCAA Tourney berth. In his senior season, he turned in another sterling effort earning American Hockey Coaches Assocation (AHCA) First Team All-America honors with a 15-6-3 record, a 3.00 goals against average, and a .905 save percentage. Newcomb was selected as team captain his senior year and the team’s Most Valuable Player his junior and senior seasons.
Newcomb’s career totals place him in the elite of all-time Gustie goaltenders as he ranks near the top in virtually every statistical category including third in minutes played with 4,065, third in saves with 1,975, third in shutouts with six, fifth in wins with 44, and fifth in save percentage at .897.
After graduating in 1992 with a degree in economics, Newcomb began working for the family business, Newcomb Construction and in 2000 he was promoted to president of the company. He has served on the Board of Trustees for the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art since 2007. Bret and his wife Rachel live in Madison, Wis. with their children, Gus, Gretchen, and Sadie.
