A standout two-sport athlete on the gridiron and diamond, Joe Thorvig transferred to Gustavus his freshman year and quickly became a leader for both the football and baseball teams.

Playing four seasons at shortstop on the baseball team, Thorvig graduated as the program record holder with 371 career assists and was second with 141 games played. His 26 career doubles and 14 career home runs were third and fourth most, respectively, in program history at the time of graduation and he still owns the career record with 17 sacrifice hits. Thorvig had a career batting average of .265 with 78 RBIs, while earning All-Conference honors his senior year when the Gusties went 25-11 overall and finished second in the MIAC.

Despite playing just three seasons as quarterback for the football team, Thorvig graduated second on the program’s all-time career passing list in yards (6,251), touchdowns (59), completions (493), and attempts (845). Thorvig proved to be an efficient passer, graduating as the program record holder with a 58.3 completion percentage. Thorvig earned All-Conference honors in 2000 and 2001, and was team captain his senior year. He led the Gusties to a pair of seven-win seasons and went 6-3 in the MIAC all three years.

Thorvig graduated cum laude in 2002 with majors in accounting and finance. After starting his professional career in public accounting, Thorvig moved on to the staffing industry and is currently an account director overseeing national independent contractor programs at MBO Partners. Joe and his wife, Karrie have two children, Kennedy and Reagan.
