Regarded as the greatest swimmer in the history of Gustavus men’s swimming & diving, Mat Stewart left a legacy that includes 13 All-America honors as well as 15 MIAC individual and relay championships.
 
Driven to be the best who brought out the most in his teammates, Stewart helped the Gusties win the MIAC championship during his freshman year, while winning two relay races at the conference meet. Stewart went on to claim All-America honors in the 400 free relay at the 2006 NCAA Championships.
 
Possessing the ability to remain consistently disciplined, Stewart earned six All-America honors at the 2007 NCAA Championships, highlighted by a runner-up finish in the 200 freestyle, which is the highest individual place at the national meet in program history. Stewart led the Gusties to a fifth place team finish at the 2007 NCAA meet, marking the highest finish in program history.
 
During both his junior and senior seasons, Stewart earned All-America honors in the 500 freestyle, 200 freestyle, and 800 freestyle relay. Stewart finished his decorated career with 121 points at the NCAA Championships, standing as the most points at the national level in team history. Stewart also added six All-America honorable mention accolades, was an 11-time NCAA B standard achiever, and a six-time NCAA A standard achiever. The Burnsville, Minn. native still holds the MIAC record in the 500 freestyle and earned 23 All-Conference awards throughout his career.
 
After graduating in 2009 with a major in biology, Stewart earned his doctorate of veterinary medicine from Kansas State University in 2014. He then worked a rotating internship at the VCA Animal Referral and Emergency Center of Arizona before holding a diagnostic imaging residency at Louisiana State University. Since 2019, Mat has been a radiologist at Antech Imaging Services and lives in Phoenix, Ariz. with his wife Elizabeth, and their children, William and Andrea.
