Terry Olson was the first All-America recipient for the Gustavus men's golf program as Head Coach Whitey Skoog was building the Gusties into a national power in the mid-'80s. Olson, who qualified for the NCAA Championships individually in 1983 and 1984, was the catalyst in helping the Gusties earn their first-ever team invitation to the NCAA Championships in 1985. Olson fired a 72-hole total of 75-78-70-77-300 that spring to finish sixth individually, earning first team All-America honors and helping Gustavus finish fifth as a team, which was the highest finish in school history at the time. In addition to his national accomplishments, Olson played on four Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship teams, earning all-conference honors three times and winning conference medalist honors twice (1982 and 1983). He is one of only five golfers to have ever won two MIAC individual titles in the history of the conference tournament (incidentally, all five golfers are from Gustavus).
After graduating magna cum laude with a major in economics, Olson began his career in 1986 as an assistant bank examiner with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). In 1997, he received the Division of Supervision Examiner of the Year award for the Kansas City Region before moving to the Fargo, North Dakota, office where he now continues his career as bank examiner for the FDIC. Terry lives in Fargo with his wife, Kathy, and their two sons, Trenton (8), and Tanner (6).
