Lisa Broughten burst onto the Gustavus women’s tennis scene in the fall of 1994 when she teamed with senior Tracy Erickson to win the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III National Doubles Championship. In the spring, she won Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) titles at #3 singles and #2 doubles as the Gusties finished league play with a 9–0 record, won their fifth straight conference title, and placed seventh at the NCAA Championships. Broughten continued her fine play in her sophomore season winning the MIAC title at #1 singles as the Gusties claimed their sixth straight league title and placed ninth at the NCAA Championships. In her junior and senior seasons, Broughten played #1 singles and #1 doubles and helped Gustavus win two more MIAC titles and post impressive fifth and third place finishes, respectively at the NCAA Championships. The four-time all-conference and two-time All-America honoree helped the Gusties compile an overall mark of 83–31 and a league record of 40–0 during her career. In her senior year, Broughten received the highest honor presented to a Division III women’s tennis player when she was named the National Arthur Ashe Award winner, which is given to the player who exemplifies the highest standards of tennis excellence, sportsmanship, academics, and citizenship.
After graduating with a degree in psychology, Broughten continued her education at Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia earning her master’s degree in occupational therapy. She is currently employed as a pediatric occupational therapist and developmental specialist at St. Cloud Hospital. She lives in St. Cloud, Minn. with her husband, Curt, and their children, Shelby, Cody, and Sedona.
