The most decorated kicker in the 100-season history of Gustavus football, Ryan Boutwell was the face of Gustie special teams during the late 1990s. Boutwell joined the football team in 1995 and earned the starting job as the placekicker, a position he would hold all four seasons wearing the winged helmet. Boutwell’s leg-strength and accuracy allowed him to set multiple career records including points scored by kicking with 200, field goals made with 34, and extra point attempts made with 98. He also set single season records with 70 points scored and 13 field goals made in 1997.

Boutwell’s superb kicking ability gained attention at the conference, as well as the regional and national levels. The Shoreham, Vermont native was named All-Conference in 1996 and 1997. After the 1996 season, where he made 12-of-12 extra points and 12-of-19 field goals for 48 points, Boutwell received honorable mention All-America recognition by Football Gazette magazine. The 1997 campaign proved to be the most prolific of Boutwell’s career as he put 31 point-after kicks through the uprights on 32 attempts, and connected on 13-of-18 field goals for a total of 70 points. His 13 made field goals were the most in the nation and his 52-yard make against Macalester stands as the second longest field goal in school history. Boutwell was named to the Football Gazette All-West Region First Team and later made three All-America teams including First Team honors by Hewlett-Packard and Football Gazette and Third Team honors by Associated Press.

After graduating in 1999 with a major in management, Boutwell became a Financial Advisor with CAPTRUST Financial Advisors and is currently a Retirement Plan Consultant with Associated Financial Group. He also serves as a board member for the Plymouth Youth Baseball Association and is an active youth baseball coach as well as a youth football coach for the Wayzata Plymouth Football Association. Boutwell is married to Kami (Wraspir) ’99 and together they have three children, Zach, Kyle, and Luke. The Boutwells live in Maple Grove, Minnesota.
