Tonya Mouw was a three-sport standout for Gustavus in the infancy of women's athletics during the early 1970's. She earned twelve letters while competing in volleyball, basketball and softball.
In volleyball, Mouw was a defensive specialist and an outstanding server as she earned the Queen Bee Award (given to the player who scored the most points on serve in a season) in her freshman, sophomore and senior seasons. She was also captain of the 1975 squad that compiled a regular season record of 10-1.
In basketball, Tonya was the team's leading scorer and Most Valuable Player in her sophomore and junior seasons as the Gusties finished second in the state tournament each year. In softball, Mouw was a four-year starter in the infield and compiled a career batting average over .300.
After graduating with majors in biology and health, Mouw was hired by Hennepin County as a deputy sheriff. She also served as the firearms and defensive tactics instructor. In 1985, Mouw accepted a job with the Hennepin County Attorney's Office, while also attending William Mitchell College of Law.
She graduated with her law degree in 1991 and went on to be an investigator with the Hennepin County Attorney's Office, working in the juvenile division. She practices law, however, on a pro bono basis only and provides legal services to the Minnesota AIDS Project; Tonya also has a daughter, Nikki.
